Programme Note
FRAGMENT V – for violin and piano (piano ad lib.)
The piece quotes as a motto from Rilke’s Love Song (Liebeslied), in which the poet praises the wonder of love by comparing the two lovers with two strings on a violin: Together they (may) produce one tone…! The short piece connects to Rilke’s metaphor by a music where the two performing artists draw on the same line; A singer and a pianist: one melody. A version for alto and orchestra was made in 1963 (as the last song of “3 Kærlighedssange/ 3 Love Songs”) and a version for voice and violin was made in 2004, with the title “Zwei saiten – eine stimme”.
